Lithic means stone and in archaeological terms it is applied to any stone that has been modified in any way whatsoever by humans.
Lithic analysis, therefore, is the study of those stones, usually stone tools, using scientific approaches.
The find is "unequivocal proof for pre-Clovis occupation of America," said Steven Forman, of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
The area where the tools were found, northwest of Austin, must have been an appealing campsite for millennia, because it bears a record of nearly continuous occupation from 15,500 years ago.
The only organic material they find is the remains of the curator.
They date it, and from that, peg all the stone sculptures found in the museum at 2000 years old.
In this relative dating method, Latin terms ante quem and post quem are usually used to indicate both the oldest and the most recent possible moments when an event occurred or an artifact was left in a stratum.
But this method is also useful in many other disciplines.
Relative dating methods are unable to determine the absolute age of an object or event, but can determine the impossibility of a particular event happening before or after another event of which the absolute date is well known. That means that the play was without fail written after (in Latin, post) 1587.The same inductive mechanism is applied in archaeology, geology and paleontology, by many ways. But the resources in the area were likely plentiful, added Michael Waters, of the Center for the Study of the First Americans at Texas A&M University in College Station and co-author of the new study. With the rich hill country around them, "it's not surprising people came back time and time again." The people who left the tools and fragments described in the study were likely hunter–gatherers, passing through the site from time to time over thousands of years.
The discovery is detailed in a new study, published online March 24 in .
